The Passion Project
For my Passion Project I directed, acted, wrote, and filmed a 20 minute short story “Elizabeth” which is about two sisters who go missing. Along my side was main actor Serra Kimsey who starred as Michelle, the popular sister. I starred as the outcast, nerd sister named Elizabeth. Our movie was based in the 1980’s. We had 14 actors, a director and co-director, 3 main filmographers, 2 script writers and 2 editors. I did this project because I love to direct and film. When I was littler my siblings and I would make movies using an iPad. I would always be the one telling everyone what to do and the one filming. My friend Serra loves to act so we thought we could work together to produce a movie. We never thought we would get done filming 23 scenes in one week. The first week (only 3 days) we started this project, we wrote the 20 page script! We even got it critiqued by 3 different people. The second week of the project we filmed all 23 scenes, using every second of the 2 hours we were given each day to film on schedule. Doing this was very challenging for us because we like doing things opposite ways. In the end we were happy with the product we came out with.
If I could restart this project, I would definitely ask for more time. If I had more time I think the movie could have been more thought out, I could put more effort and passion into it, and really be proud of it. With such short amount of time, the scenes were a little bit rushed. I would also change the way I used my time. For example really putting together a planner of every actors free time. Much of our limited (2 hours a day) class time was wasted waiting for our actors to be ready to film. It was challenging working around their schedule, so we had to film during our PA and lunch. I would not wait till the last day of our filming period to get about 10 scenes done. That last Friday we were so excited to edit we just had to go along with what we had, which was really hard to do because I wanted to be more proud of the movie. I’m proud of us for getting all of this done, we dropped everything to make this movie great but we just didn’t have enough time. With more time comes more energy, effort, and passion.
I want to do so much more with this passion project. I want to make movies as projects because I just love to film and be creative. I want to learn how to professionally edit. For my senior project I was thinking of making my own movie where I do everything without another partner, I want to take on that challenge. Serra and I were even thinking of a sequel to this movie “Elizabeth” because it ends as a cliffhanger. After completing this project I found more of a passion in filming and directing! I want to make movies with P Kitty Productions, be apart of the group! I love this project because you got to pick your own adventure and just be creative and unique. The one thing that I don’t like about directing and filming was working with a person who has their own way of doing things. I would’ve much rather liked working by myself which I think I would be more proud of and be more of what I like to do rather than someone else taking over the project. In the future I would like to make a sequel or just another movie of my own.
